Mother’s Day has always been one of those holidays that makes me stop and reflect—on where I’ve been, who I’ve become, and the bond I share with my little one. As a vintage fashion photographer and artist, I find so much joy in capturing meaningful moments with intentional styling. This year, I wanted to create something truly personal—something timeless.

The Inspiration Behind the Look
As someone who lives and breathes vintage fashion, I’m constantly inspired by the silhouettes, fabrics, and charm of bygone eras. There’s something so romantic and playful about 1950s fashion—especially the way full skirts twirl with joy.
The orange-print fabric used for our skirts had been sitting in my sewing stash for months. I’d originally picked it up because it reminded me of the citrus groves of Southern California and had such a happy, summery vibe. When Mother’s Day rolled around, I knew it was the perfect time to turn that fabric into something special.
I sewed the matching skirts by hand, using a classic circle skirt pattern—voluminous, high-waisted, and full of nostalgic flair. It was a sweet little love letter to motherhood, creativity, and the joy of dressing up together.
Setting the Scene: A Vintage-Inspired Picnic
We packed up a picnic basket with cookies, and lemonade, and headed to a nearby park that had just the right mix of tall grass, dappled light, and open space. I brought along a knitted blanket, a stack of books, and a few of our favorite toys.
As the afternoon unfolded, I photographed our time together in a way that felt both candid and styled—documenting the twirls, the snuggles, the silliness, and the quiet moments. It wasn’t just about getting the perfect photo, it was about creating memories we could return to again and again.

Why I Document Motherhood Through a Vintage Lens
There’s something undeniably powerful about mothers seeing themselves in beautiful, timeless portraits—especially when those portraits capture the essence of their unique relationship with their children. For me, vintage styling is more than just aesthetic—it’s a way of storytelling.
By blending nostalgic elements with real moments, I aim to create imagery that feels classic yet deeply personal. The act of dressing in vintage fashion—especially with your child—can feel like stepping into a storybook, one where the ordinary becomes magical. This magic also reminds me of my childhood with my mother and grandmother who have been my encouragers and inspirations throughout my life.
And what better occasion than Mother’s Day to celebrate that magic?

Matching Outfits, Lasting Memories
Our coordinated vintage picnic outfits weren’t just adorable—they were a physical symbol of our bond. Wearing matching skirts created a sense of unity, fun, and a little bit of theatrical flair. Plus, it made the photo shoot feel more like a celebration than a production.
There’s something undeniably charming about mother-child matching looks—especially when they’re handmade. I hope that someday, my little one will look back on these photos and remember not just what we wore, but how it felt: warm sun, full skirts,

How You Can Create Your Own Vintage-Inspired Mother’s Day Moment
If you’re inspired to create your own nostalgic Mother’s Day celebration, here are a few ideas:
Choose a Vintage Theme
Pick a decade that resonates with you—whether it’s the 1950s with its playful prints and flared skirts, or the 1970s with its earthy tones and flowing dresses.
Dress the Part
Thrift, sew, or repurpose vintage-inspired clothing for you and your child. Look for fun patterns like florals, fruits, or gingham.
Plan a Simple Picnic
A cozy blanket, a basket of snacks, and some books or toys are all you need for a memorable afternoon.
Bring a Camera (or Book a Photographer)
Whether you hire someone or take your own photos, focus on capturing real interactions, not just poses. Let your time together lead the way.
Make it Your Own
Personal touches—like a handmade skirt, a favorite childhood book, or a family recipe—can turn a simple shoot into a cherished memory.
Closing Thoughts
This year’s Mother’s Day project reminded me why I do what I do. It blended all my passions—vintage fashion, photography, motherhood, and creativity—into a single, joy-filled afternoon.
I hope this little peek into our vintage picnic photo shoot inspires you to celebrate your own motherhood journey in a way that feels authentic, beautiful, and lasting.
Because when we honor the past and live fully in the present, we create moments our children will carry with them always.
Happy Mother's Day to all the Mamas out there!
